Without comment, the U.S. Supreme Court denied a hearing on the Osage Nation reservation and tax case against the Oklahoma State Tax Commission. The order (on page 8) and Chief John Red Eagle's statement are attached. We'll have a story in this week's Bigheart Times.

Mrs. Edna Lois Lacy, 86, died peacefully in her sleep Thursday, June 23, 2011 at her home.
Services for Mrs. Lacy will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 27th, at the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel in Barnsdall with Garry McDevitt, pastor of the First Baptist Church at Prue officiating. Casket escorts for Mrs. Lacy will be Eric Diehl, Kyle Streets, Nick Streets, Genson Streets, Ryan Moore and Trenton Haberly. Interment will be in he Ethel Reece Cemetery at Barnsdall directed by the Stumpff-Barnsdall Funeral Home. Visitation for Mrs. Lacy will be at the Stumpff funeral Home in Bartlesville until 6 P.M. on Saturday, June 25th, at which time she will be transferred to the Stumpff Funeral Home in Barnsdall for visitation Sunday, June 26th from 1:00-8:00 P.M. and Monday, June 27th from 9:00 A.M. till 1:00 P.M., prior to the funeral service.
Edna Lois Sample was born on the family farm in Van Buren, Arkansas on December 31, 1924 to Virginia and Grace Sample. The time she loved the best was when she was on the farm with her adored

While boys were getting ready to ride pony broncs Saturday evening at the Osage County fairgrounds in Pawhuska, a twister formed to the north, as you can see in this photo by Randee Quillin McKee. She said it formed, drew back up then formed again. Tornado warnings were issued, but much further north.

Lifelong area resident BETTY LOU PURTLE passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in the Pawhuska Nursing Home. She was 76 years old.
Betty was born January 26, 1935, the daughter of Joe Henry and Lou Vernie (Reeves) Wadsworth. She was born in her parents’ home in Nelagoney, Oklahoma. On January 26, 1971, she married Jack Warren Purtle in Sedan, Kansas. He preceded her in death June 10, 1987. A homemaker, Betty enjoyed drinking her coffee and visiting with her friends and family. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are: Her sister: Rosella Parker Guffey and husband, Gerald;Her brother: Vernon Lee Wadsworth and wife, Juanita; Great nephew: Kodie Willard; Two nieces: Alice Wadsworth and Cindy Willard; And a host of other family and friends. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Pete and Robert Lee Wadsworth.
Services will be held Monday, June 20, 10:00 AM, at the Church of God, Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The Rev. Pat Hailey, assisted by Clifford Stroud, will officiate. Interment will be in the Pawhuska City Cemetery.

Lillian Elvina Libby, 92, former resident of Barnsdall, died Saturday at Independence, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday in the Ethel Reece Cemetery in Barnsdall. Graveside services and interment will be under the direction of the Stumpff Barnsdall Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established and those who wish to make a contribution in memory of Mrs. Libby may do so to: American Cancer Society P.O. Box 1094 Bartlesville, Oklahoma 74005.
Lillian Elvina Libby was born December 2, 1918 at Sallisaw to James and Pearl (Brown) Clapp. She was raised and received her education in Sallisaw. She was married to Orville Arthur Libby on August 1, 1940 at Sayre. Mrs. Libby had lived in Barnsdall since the early 1930s. After they were married they traveled extensively while Mr. Libby worked in the oil pipeline business. Mrs. Libby was employed at the Barnsdall Flower Shop for several years and also worked at a convenience store in Pawhuska.
Survivors include; one son James Libby of Edmond; six grandchildren Libby A. Hamilton of Independence, Kansas, Dake Shreffler of Tonkawa, Tonya Libby of Bartlesville, Tom Libby of Barnsdall, Kerry Housley and Sheri Libby of Edmond; eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Libby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1982, one daughter Sandra Shreffler and one son Tom Libby.

Osage County had a "stand your ground" aka "Make My Day" fatal shooting this morning. Homeowner found two men allegedly breaking into his garage and stealing tools, investigators said. The homeowner approached, the two men backed a truck at him, and the homeowner shot at them. One died of a single gunshot wound, the other ran, was subsequently apprehended and is jailed. Homeowner is not charged. According to the Sheriff's Office, dead is Steven Baker, 22, of Skiatook. Another man, Harley Eschbach. was jailed this afternoon on pending charges of 2nd degree burglary and 1st degree murder (in commission of a felony, i.e. the burglary). Shooting occurred around 4:15 a.m. on N 36 W Ave. Details unavailable at the moment: Investigation is continuing.
