Margie Henderson obituary: Raised in Avant, she worked with Osage Nutrition

Margie Marie Henderson, 85, former resident of Barnsdall, died at 9:35 PM on Friday in the Skiatook Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM  on  Tuesday  in the Barnsdall Assembly of God Church with Pastor Phil Clements officiating.  Interment will be in the Ethel Reece Cemetery under the direction of the Stumpff-Barnsdall Funeral Home.

Margie Marie Henderson was born July 4, 1925 at Bixby, Oklahoma to Alec and Irene (True) Forbes.  She was raised and educated in the Avant, Oklahoma area, graduating from Avant High School in 1944.  Mrs. Henderson was married to Millard Dean “Bud” Henderson on December 19, 1943 at Skiatook.  Following Mr. Henderson’s return from military service, they made their home in Kansas and western Oklahoma for 12 years with Mr. Henderson’s employment with Cities Service Oil Company.  They lived for a number of years in Northeastern Oklahoma, Lindsay, Ada and Seminole areas of Oklahoma. After Mr. Henderson’s retirement in 1982 they returned to Barnsdall to make their home.  Mrs. Henderson was employed for several years with the Osage Nutrition Project until her retirement.  She was a member of Barnsdall Assembly of God Church.  Mr. Henderson preceded her in death on January 1, 1999.

Survivors include; her son Wayne D. Henderson and his wife Elizabeth Ann of Skiatook, Oklahoma; two granddaughters Holly Jo Henderson and her husband Chad Buckwalter of Walnut Shade, Missouri and Heather Ann Hayne and her husband Kelly Hayne; one grandson Christopher Dean Henderson and his wife Krissi; one brother Burl Forbes and one sister Opal Griffith both of Skiatook; nine great-grandchildren Gabe Plank of Edmond, Haleigh Plank and  Chloe Plank of Walnut Shade, Missouri, Kamryn Hayne and Eli Hayne of Tulsa, Madelynn Henderson, Macy Henderson, Mallory Henderson and Mason Henderson all of Pawhuska.

George Meyers obituary: A vice president of Bareco, crooner, square dancer and devoted volunteer who grew up in Indian reservations

George L. Meyers, 93, a retired vice president of Petrolite Corp.’s Bareco Division, died Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Heritage Villa Nursing Center, Bartlesville, after a brief illness. 

    Born July 25, 1917, at El Paso, TX, he was the son of George Lentton Meyers, Sr., and Sallie Frances Key. His parents, both teachers, joined the U.S. Indian Service when he was two years old. He grew up on the Pima, Maricopa, Zuni, Navajo, and Hopi reservations in Arizona and New Mexico, as well as at Tulalip, WA, where his father was principal and his mother a teacher at a boarding school serving 33 tribes.

   After graduating from Durango High School, Durango, CO, Mr. Meyers attended Fort Lewis Junior College at Hesperus, CO, and earned chemical engineering degrees from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Ohio State University, with a concentration on industrial waxes. He was an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, before joining Bareco in 1945 as an engineer at its Barnsdall plant. He rose to plant manager and at retirement was in charge of all Bareco Division manufacturing.  

    He and his wife, Vera Whisler Meyers, made their home in Barnsdall until moving to Pawhuska more than 30 years ago. They were married for 55 years; she died in 2008. A previous marriage, to Eleanor Henderson, ended in divorce. 

   As young square dancers, George and Vera taught many couples their dosey-does, and George became a popular caller. Both George and Vera were active supporters and docents of the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. George was a member of Rotary, the First United Methodist Church of Pawhuska, the Constantine Center, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and many civic committees and organizations. He was president of the Buffalo Hills Golf Club for several terms and served on the board of the Pawhuska hospital. He enjoyed golf, hunting, and fishing. 

    Preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald F. Meyers of Greeley, CO, whose widow survives, George Meyers—known as “Bing” to his family, for his youthful crooning—is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Harold Burton and Jean A. Meyers, of Williamsburg, Va. Also surviving George and Vera are three nieces: Sallie Holman, Denver, CO; Mary Kay Rohrback, Redmond, WA; and Elizabeth Asher, Olympia, WA, as well as six nephews: Terry L. Meyers, Williamsburg, VA; John B. Meyers, Louisville, KY; Steven K. Meyers, Louisville; Peter S. Meyers, Portland, OR; William D. Meyers, Laredo, TX, and George A. Meyers, Modesto, CA. Some thirty great- and great-great- nieces and nephews are scattered from Washington and Oregon to Vermont.

    Services are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The First United Methodist Church, 621 Leahy, Pawhuska, OK 74056.

Courthouse public hearing set

The Osage County Commissioners have set hearing to get public input on the county courthouse plans on Tuesday April 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the county fairgrounds in Pawhuska. Everyone invited.

Cletha Nightengale obituary: She and her husband raised their own children, and cared for more than 200 others

CLETHA M. NIGHTENGALE passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011 in the Pawhuska Hospital, Inc.  She was 91 years old.

Mrs. Nightengale was born February 15, 1920 in Mudlarke, Oklahoma, the daughter of John and Effie (Flanry) McCaslin.  On September 28, 1940, she married Orvil J. “Jack” Nightengale in Independence, Kansas.  He preceded her in death April 12, 2004.  The Nightengales not only raised their own family over the years, they had also served as Foster Parents for the Department of Human Services, taking care of more than 200 children.  Well known in the area as an excellent cook, Cletha loved cooking at the Lynn and Indian Camp Schools in Pawhuska.  In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, sewing and quilting.  She was long time member of the Nazarene Church in Pawhuska, where she had taught Sunday School for many years.

Surviving are: Her children: Clara Standridge, Danny Nightengale, Connie Kilpatrick and Hester Ferguson; Her siblings: Thedshoia Parks, Geneva Cashon and Francis Meeks; 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

Graveside services will be held Friday, April 15, at 10:00 AM in the Pawhuska City Cemetery.  Pastor Jim Wilson, Pawhuska First Church of the Nazarene, will officiate.  Interment will follow.
